St. Joseph drubs Trumbull, clinched state playoff berth

Emery Filmer, CTPost.com

TRUMBULL CT, NOV 21, 2012 - Jordan Vazzano had about as close to a perfect quarterback rating as possible in St. Joseph's 55-20 victory over rival Trumbull Wednesday night at McDougall Stadium. But he wasn't the only Cadet who flirted with the P-word.

For 26 minutes, or until St. Joseph coach Joe DellaVecchia removed the starters early in the third quarter, the Cadets were virtually flawless. With a determined Vazzano going 7-for-8 (one dropped pass) for 212 yards and four touchdowns, the Cadets built a 49-0 third-quarter lead on their way to one of the most lopsided victories in the history of the rivalry.

"I really wanted this one," Vazzano said after St. Joseph had clinched a Class M state playoff berth. "It's great to be back in the states (St. Joseph last made it in 2010), but I really wanted this one."

Vazzano completed his first seven pass attempts for 186 yards. Four went for scores from 28 yards (to Denzel Moscova), 42 (Mark Hirschbeck), 10 (Kyron Crawford) and 46 (Jake Pelletier).

"(Vazzano) is the best quarterback in the (FCIAC)," DellaVecchia said. "He had a great game. We have some really good receivers, but he put it right on the money."

Throw in a defensive touchdown by Ryan Moran and TD runs by Mike Pulaski and Crawford, and it was seven touchdowns on 29 plays in 26 minutes. The Cadets (8-2) didn't miss top running back Mufasa Abdul-Basir (academics) as they ran for 206 yards, and the defense held Trumbull to 79 total yards through nearly 2½ quarters before the starters left.

The Eagles (5-5) didn't know what hit them.

"Shocked," Trumbull coach Bob Maffei said. "That's all I can say. I'm shocked. It's a shame the seniors had to go out like this."

St. Joseph will now await the results of today's games to see who and where it will play. The Cadets, who have won four in a row by a combined score of 208-54, will need a couple of teams to lose today to get a home game.

"The last four games were like playoff games for us because we had to win them all," DellaVecchia said.

The ease with which the Cadets won Wednesday did not only surprise Maffei.

"All day I was nervous," said Vazzano, who won the MVP award for St. Joseph. "I really thought it would be close."

"I was a wreck all week," DellaVecchia added. "But I thought we could do some things with the ball. I knew we'd be able to throw it on them."

Trumbull, which was 0-13 on third and fourth downs, made it respectable after falling behind 49-0. Trumbull MVP Ryan Pearson ran 43 yards for a touchdown and finished with 104 yards rushing. Marc Cesare had TD runs of 65 and 64 yards in the fourth quarter and finished with 137 yards rushing.

The Cadets, who had 418 total yards, added a late score on a 1-yard run by backup quarterback Pat Boyle.
